The reviewed monograph continues the traditions of classical literary criticism and is a significant stage in the study of M.Y. Lermontov's work. It develops a new approach to the analysis of Lermontov's prose as a consistent and integral creative process, in which the dynamics of a single complex of ideas, meanings and images are traced. It is shown that the monograph has developed a promising methodology for analyzing the internal connections of the poet's works, which allows for a systematic presentation of the ideological and philosophical foundations of his artistic thinking. The review summarizes the main innovative ideas that were substantiated in the monograph. Among them are the perception of Lermontov's late works as images of existential prose, the interpretation of the double chronology in the novel "The Hero of Our Time", the identification of the mystery plan in the novel, the clarification of the place of the essay "The Caucasian" in Lermontov's work, the justification of the artistic completeness of the story "Shtoss" and its perception as a work that contains the entire range of existential problems of the era. A special emphasis in the monograph is placed on the search for a viable and promising type of national hero.
