| The article is devoted to the history of Nizhny Novgorod folklore studies in the 1920s and 1930s and the role of Associate Professor Alexander NikolaevichSvobodov (1884–1950) in university folklore studies. Based on the analysis of printed sources and archival materials (including the collection of ditties by I.I. Timin), the article reconstructs the formation of folklore and local history activities at the Nizhny Novgorod Pedagogical Institute and the Faculty of Education at Nizhny Novgorod State University. The article shows the contribution of A.N. Svobodov as a teacher, researcher, and organizer of student expeditions to the development of the study and collection of folklore in the Nizhny Novgorod region during this period. The article examines the methodological principles of A.N. Svobodov's work, which were dominated by socially oriented themes that reflected the ideological requirements of the era. Special attention is given to A.N. Svobodov's collaboration with I.I. Timin, whose collection of Nizhny Novgorod ditties (more than 7,500 authentic texts) is a valuable source of information. |
