| This article continues the author's series of publications devoted to the reception of images and episodes from Old Russian literature in historical novels of the 1940s–1990s. Using the "Tale of Mityai" from the Russian chronicles the researcher turns to the image of the Dmitry Donskoy’s boyarin – Yuri Vasilyevich Kochevin-Oleshinsky – and the its interpretation in the historical novel "Expiation" (1980) by the Leningrad writer V.A. Lebedev. The fact of the failure of the mission to elevate the prot?g? of the Moscow prince to the Russian metropolitanate, entrusted to the head of the embassy, as well as the tendentious (negative) images of the participants of this embassy in the chronicle "Tale of Mityai" largely influenced their interpretation in historical works and fiction of the 19th-20th centuries. In the historical novels "Dmitry Donskoy" (1941) by S. P. Borodin and "Holy Rus'" (1997) by D.M. Balashov, Kochevin-Oleshinsky becomes a minor character, whose guilt is explained by laziness and habituation to a comfortable life (Borodin), as well as class ambitions (Balashov). V. Lebedev, on the other hand, delves into the hero's inner world, illuminating it through the prism of the key motifs of his work – flesh, unbelief, and sin – which is conditioned by the very problematic of the socio-psychological novel. |
