| The article examines the material image of chest in V.I. Belov's trilogy "The Sixth Hour". It traces the dynamics of this image: from a repository of a girl's dowry to a kind of ark, a sign of the covenant between God and humans. The article notes the similarities between the episodes in the trilogy, where the character acts as a thief breaking into chests, and the episodes in Old Russian tales. Based on the analysis of the character's material sphere as an ensemble of three types of boxes (a chest, a trunk, and a wardrobe), it is suggested that the character is depicted in a dual perspective. The article examines the visual code accompanying references to the chest in the novel: the image of a lion with its raised paw on the door to the room is associated with the image of the head of the household, Yevgraf Mironov. A special connection is established between the "chest" episode and the episode of dekulakization. It is concluded that the development of the metaphorical and allegorical meaning of the chest-ark is determined by the time of the novel's action: at a turning point in history, the object begins to reveal its existential status. |
