| The article continues the series of the author's publications devoted to the interpretation of literature through the prism of system of bestiarian codes and at the same time represents an experience of moving in two new directions: 1) the application of the author's methodology to drama; 2) an attempt to outline the main methodological principles of bestiarian analysis. Personal research interest is also twofold: to determine how universal the author's interpretative techniques are, repeatedly tested on the lyrics, and to outline a general scheme of reading based on "bestiarian exclusion". Ostrovsky's play "Wolves and Sheep" seems to be tailor-made for use as a teaching tool. The bestiary opposition in the title perfectly encapsulates the main idea of the play. A detailed immanent analysis of the bestiary layer of the play reveals new plot and meaning connections within the work, as well as new nuances in characterization that were previously overlooked in classical interpretations. |
